Hell Courtesan (地獄太夫): The character of Hell Courtesan was based on late Edo to early Meiji era Ukiyo-e printings which were done by many famous artists like Kunichika, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Kawanabe Kyosai. In the artwork represents, a beautiful courtesan who wears an uchikake (coat-liked outer kimono) with the picture of Buddhist hell.
Hell Courtesan used to be the daughter of the samurai family but was kidnapped and sold to a brothel. Since then she named herself "Jigoku"(hell) because she believed that the cause of her suffering was her previous life's karma. Later, she became one of the highest rank prostitutes which gave her the title of "Tayuu", although she was said to be a very arrogant courtesan who treated others badly. Jigoku-Dayuu of Takasu was adopted by the Zen priest Ikkyu and began to study Buddhism to free herself from the karma. After her death, the King of Hell, Enma-O, showed her her true self and what she saw, was how black her heart was in the reality. She was punished by wearing an uchikake of hell's demons and torturing souls to remind how bad she used to treat other people when she was alive.

Extra: There have many different versions of the story; Some were told that after Jigoku-Dayuu had studied the Buddhism, she achieved the enlightenment and understood that the life was impermanence. That was why she decided to wear an uchikake with the picture of hell to let people understand more about death and life.
